The Brief

The brief was to modernise their service offering by translating their established, in-person conflict management courses into a highly engaging Progressive Web Application (PWA). The priority was user engagement and WCAG-compliant accessibility for remote participants. The output – high-fidelity, interactive mockups – focused on creating a simplified, linear learning journey, micro-dosing complex training content.

Key Stakeholders: The PeaceWise Executive Board and Head of Training.

My role

As the Lead UI Designer, I stepped in during the critical high-fidelity phase to translate low-fidelity wireframes and workshop insights into a visually polished and functional solution.

  • Creative Leadership: Defined the final visual design system, designed custom icons for tools (e.g., Four Gs, PAUSE Principle), and integrated gamification elements (e.g., progress trees, olive leaf achievements) to drive motivation.
  • Client Management & Technical Bridge: Managed stakeholder expectations regarding the balance of gamification with the serious content, and acted as the primary liaison between the client’s vision and the development team to ensure user goals and human-centred design remained at the forefront of the technical implementation.
  • Quality Assurance: Facilitated usability testing to ensure the design’s way-finding, CTA contrast, and iconography were clear and accessible to the target personas (inspiration seekers, conflict navigators).

Outcomes

The project was a high-profile success, achieving Finalist status in the 2025 Australian Web Awards (Mobile App Category).

  • Gamification and Engagement: The integration of gamification elements successfully drove user engagement, validating the design’s strategy.
  • Intuitive Design: Successfully integrated complex program frameworks (Coach and Tools sections) into an accessible, easily digestible mobile grid, leading to positive feedback on its intuitive design and high client satisfaction.

Success criteria

The project was highly validated by achieving Finalist status in the 2025 Australian Web Awards. This confirmed the design’s technical quality and user engagement strategy, particularly the successful integration of complex program frameworks into an accessible, easily digestible mobile grid.

Reflections

While a PWA was chosen for simplicity, I learned to challenge technical constraints earlier. I would advocate earlier in the discovery phase for a solution with stronger push notification capabilities. This would have allowed the team to leverage the “daily encouragement” feature more robustly, further enhancing user retention beyond the in-app alert system.
